Rain Barrels are a simple, efficient, low-cost method for homeowners to collect and recycle water.  Using rain as a resource in rain gardens and rain barrels can have a dramatic impact on water quality in our rivers and streams and will help reduce flooding.

Rain barrels are simply large containers that capture rainwater at the end of your downspout, which you can then use to water plants, wash your car and further reduce your water bill while also reducing polluted runoff from getting to our rivers and streams!

The Conservation Foundation sells three types of rain barrels:

  • Our 55 gallon recycled food grade plastic rain barrels come equipped with a spigot, garden hose threaded overflow and screen in the top to help keep out bugs and debris, and have screw off lids. Many of our barrels were originally used to import pickles and olives, but they can find new life in your yard! These barrels sell for $85 . Colors may vary; common colors are black, grey and terra cotta.
  • Also available is the same re-used barrel with a wide 1 - inch overflow for high water locations, available in black for $100
  • We also carry Aquascape Designs' RainXchange rain barrel featuring a 75 gallon capacity, large overflow and a planter integrated into the lid. These barrels sell for $175 and are available in Terra Cotta or Sandstone colors.

See The Conservation Foundation's video about installing and using rain barrels here!

Some facts about rain barrels and the tremendous impact they can have on our water resources:

- It's estimated that during the hot summer months, the average homeowner uses 40 percent of the household water in the yard.
- Collecting the mineral rich & chlorine free rain that falls on your roof can help your garden, houseplants and reduce your water bill!
- Modern rain barrels are sealed, safe around children and insect resistant.
- A hose spigot on the front makes the captured rainwater available.
- Keeping the rain that falls on our property, utilizing it and not allowing it to run off will help recharge the water supply and reduce the stress on our creeks and rivers.
- A quarter-inch of rain falling on the average home yields over 200 gallons of water.

Rain barrels are available for purchase and pick up every Thursday from 2 to 4p.m. April through September at:
