Welcome To The Take a Hike! Challenge

Challenge Week 1:

We’re excited to kick off eight fun weeks of getting outside and connecting with nature. Whether you’re hiking at a brisk pace or taking it slow, stepping outside for a walk or hike can be the perfect pick-me-up! There are numerous medically documented health benefits of getting out in nature including reducing stress and anxiety, enhancing your immune system, getting better sleep, and boosting your mood.

Every hiker is different and should embrace their own hiking style. Some people aim to complete a trail as quickly as possible, while others prefer to savor the journey, stopping to snap photos and enjoy the scenery. From easy strolls on flat paths to more challenging routes, there’s a hike to match every preference. The most important part is that you are spending time outdoors breathing in the fresh air!

Sign Up For The Challenge

Sign up for The Conservation Foundation and Endeavor Health Take a Hike! Challenge. Participation is free and easy with three simple steps:

1. Sign up online by September 30th

2. Get out and hike from September 2nd to October 28th

3. Turn in the Take a Hike! Tracker with 6 completed hikes to earn the Take a Hike! Trail Blaze Award* (commemorative pin or medallion, and 1st time participants can earn a hiking stick + medallion)

* Must register individually online to be eligible. Supplies are limited. Offer is valid while supplies last.

As you kick off the first week of the Take a Hike! Challenge, here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. Check with Your Doctor: Ensure you’re healthy enough for hiking.
  2. Weather Check: Look at the local forecast to choose the best day and time. Dress for the conditions with lightweight, moisture-wicking clothes and comfortable footwear.
  3. Choose the Right Trail: Pick a trail that matches your fitness level and those of your hiking companions. Familiarize yourself with the trail map beforehand.
  4. Pack Smart: Bring a small backpack with essentials like a first aid kit, map, phone battery pack, ample water, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and nutritious snacks.
  5. Inform Others: If you’re hiking alone, let someone know your destination and expected return time.
  6. Capture the Experience: Consider bringing a camera, journal, or sketchbook to document your adventure.
  7. Trail Etiquette: Stay to the right, especially in groups, keep dogs on leashes, and always pack out what you bring in. Use designated garbage and recycling containers.
  8. Tick Awareness: It’s that time of year again when the ticks can be quite active in our area. Check out DuPage County Forest Preserve District’s short video on How To Avoid Ticks On Your Hike.

Now you’re ready to lace up your shoes, grab a friend—whether human or four-legged—and head outside! Start tracking your hikes.
