Dry spot in your yard- Nothing will grow?

 Opuntia humifusa

Yes – Cactus in Illinois!    Eastern Prickly Pear

This one is on the McDonald Farm in Naperville. growing on a high dry spot ( also pictured is Silene regia

(Royal Catchfly).  The cactus will flower a light orange blossom in spring.

Bees are attracted to the flowers, and the flesh parts are sometimes eaten by deer, rabbits and a variety of other animals despite the spines!  The cactus is fairly easy to grow – likes dry sandy, or rocky soil and does well in poor soils !
