For the last year, Robin Greenfield foraged 100% of his food and medicine, living entirely off the abundance found in the outdoors!

The Conservation Foundation and Joliet Junior College’s Office of Sustainability are hosting Robin Greenfield, environmental activist, forager, and author, to share about his journey to food freedom through foraging as he explores questions of eating in harmony with Earth, living sustainably, and living in reciprocity with nature.

Join us for an eye-opening exploration of food sovereignty through the practice of foraging. After his presentation, Robin will also lead a short plant walk identifying some common edible plants found in the local landscape and will offer a signing of his book “Food Freedom” which will be available on a donation basis. A reception with light refreshments and a seed swap will also be held during the time of the book signing.

At the event, we’ll have a table setup for a seed swap. Bring any seeds for edible or medicinal plants, pollinator-supporting plants (native plants preferred), or plants that are culturally important that are packaged, labeled with the plant name, and that were collected within the last 3 years. Take any seed packets that you are excited to grow next growing season, but only take what you’ll realistically use. Participants do not need to bring seed packets in order to take seed packets.

12:30pm – Doors open and check-in starts
1:00pm – Welcome and introductions by Joliet Junior College and The Conservation Foundation

The presentations, reception, book signing, and seed swap will be indoors in a wheelchair accessible location. The plant walk will take place outdoors. The first section of the walk will be wheelchair accessible along a concrete sidewalk. The second part of the walk will be along a grassy trail in a wooded area with uneven surfaces, which also includes a few gravel steps and a narrow wooden bridge.

What to Bring:

Please bring a reusable water bottle if needed and dress for the weather planning on being outside for up to 30 minutes. If you have any packaged and labeled seeds collected within the last 3 years that you’d like to donate to the seed swap, please bring them as well.

Speaker:

Robin Greenfield is an activist, social reformer, and servant to Earth, humanity, and the plants and animals we share our home with. His life is an experiment with truth and integrity. At the heart of Robin’s action-based philosophy is his dedication to living simply and sustainably as a means of active resistance to systems of destruction and exploitation. Through living closely connected to Earth, he is on a path of personal liberation. Through living simply, he rejects societal standards of consumerism that contribute to great inequity and injustice.

Robin’s public activism involves dramatic gestures designed to reach the mainstream and to provoke critical thought, self-reflection, and positive change. His activism creates nuanced conversations on the critical issues of our time, with a focus on solutions for living in harmony.

His work has been covered by media worldwide and he has been named “The Robin Hood of Modern Times” by France 2, “The Forrest Gump of Ecology,” and “A Thoreau-esque character for our digital age” by Rich Roll. What Robin is dedicated to is simple – liberation and basic rights for all – Earth, humanity, and our plant and animal relatives.

He has just completed a year-long campaign of foraging 100% of his food and medicine, traveling the country extensively sharing the message to reconnect with Earth. This year he launched the 1 Million Community Fruit Trees Initiative, with an objective to plant 1 million fruit and nut trees through a grassroots, collaborative effort of thousands of individuals and communities across the nation.
